Products made in the USA are available in many of the stores you already frequent. As I make my way though the store directory, I am finding all kinds of hidden gems in typical stores that are American made. Buying more products made in the USA is just the beginning. The more we know about the implications of our actions, the better armed we are to become ethical consumers. Start by checking labels, asking more questions and educating yourself.

What’s your take on consumerism and this world of planned obsolescence we now live in? CTV News Montreal had me on to talk about responsible consumption in time for Earth Day. To demonstrate my point, I had with me in the interview some locally-made, eco-friendly products by Ecojot, St.Geneve and Bio Spectra’s Attitude products.

As far as consumer goods are concerned, I won’t lie and tell you it’s easy to only buy locally made, some products are really hard to find but believe me, once you start seeking out to buy Canadian or American intentionally, you will not be able shop like you used to ever again. As a Canadian, I still throw in a lot of made in the USA stuff simply because between our two countries, we manufacture more than enough of what I need and I never have to settle on anything “just because”.

I’ve always wanted a KitchenAid Stand Mixer but the price was always an issue. We’ve been checking sales lately and hit the jackpot last weekend on The Shopping Channel when it was a Showstopper deal. Back in the day these mixers were wholly made in the USA, parts and everything but today they are considered assembled in the USA

I’m sometimes asked how, or what I use to promote made in Canada and made in USA products and the companies that make and sell them via my personal brand, In Country with Melissact & Friends. I thought I’d put a few down here… Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google Alerts, Fancy, StumbleUpon and Delicious.

18 in 1 uses for Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap. The label lists a bunch of different uses but their fans often write-in to tell them how they discovered they can use Dr. Bronner’s too. None of Dr. Bronner’s products are tested on animals, they’re completely biodegradable and vegetable-based. They’re made with certified fair trade and organic oils and contain no synthetic foaming agents, thickeners or preservatives. AND they’re all made in the USA.

When I was younger, I was all about band t-shirts and graphic skate t-shirts. Today, it’s mostly blank t-shirts and ones supporting causes, where proceeds go to charities I respect. What kind of t-shirts do you wear? What causes do you actively support (other than the Locally-made cause ;) Do you feel like you do enough to affect change in your world?

My girl Maya had a bad day. She has epilepsy and had a really long seizure Wednesday afternoon. It wasn’t the first time, nor will it be the last time. I knew this though when I signed the adoption papers. Because of her medical condition – and because she’s a great dog, I dote on her and take extra special care of her. I’d like to dedicate this post to my “niece” Cairo. Cairo was my sister’s boyfriend’s Golden Retriever. She died this afternoon at 4:00PM surrounded by love.

As I sat in my car today, driving to the office, it occurred to me that I was surrounded by – and wearing almost exclusively – made in Canada and made in USA goods. Unlike a lot of people out there, I actually practice what I… rant and rave about ;) Here are some of the different brands I buy. Most of these companies are on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as well. You can follow my made in Canada Twitter list here and my made in USA Twitter list here both of which I update on a daily basis.
